NEW ORLEANS, La. — For their last major tune-up before facing the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs ran through a 70-minute practice that focused heavily on situational football Friday morning at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium.
After starting the session with some special teams work and installs, Kansas City dove into situations, with both the starting offense and defense working on the four-minute drill, red zone, goal line and short yardage plays. In between, the team mixed in some brief individual position periods.
Once again, quarterback Patrick Mahomes directed a snappy offensive effort against the Chiefs scout team look, completing each of his passes in Friday’s session. Mahomes gathered the offense in the end zone and led a breakdown to close out the offense’s day.
“He comes out with a purpose every day, and he knows he’s playing against a real good team,” Reid said. “You can’t miss too many reps against this group.”
Kansas City practiced under a mostly cloudy sky with the temperatures hovering in the high 70s. The weather has stayed relatively consistent all week at Tulane’s Uptown New Orleans campus. Reid said he has been pleased with his team’s week of work.
“I thought the guys did good, they powered through it,” Reid said. “It was great to get outside every day, it was great weather — and the people who did the turf (at Yulman Stadium) did a phenomenal job.”
The Chiefs had perfect attendance for the third straight day, though practice squad defensive lineman Fabien Lovett left midway through Friday’s practice with an illness, Reid said. For the second straight day, the Chiefs practiced in helmets and no pads.
The team will conduct a short walk-through practice Saturday morning prior to taking a team photo.
“We’re in a good spot,” Reid said. “You’ve got to make sure you stay focused the next couple days and keep getting yourself ready. We’ll get a walk through in tomorrow and then go play.”
